If you’ve seen the movie Black Panther, or been exposed to the Internet for the past few weeks, I’m sure there’s a chance that you’ve heard about Killmonger, and how he’s being touted as one of the most compelling villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I don’t disagree with that notion, he’s certainly not a one dimensional character and his reasons for doing what he did makes sense to me.
What I don’t agree with, however, is his plan to start a worldwide revolution to liberate what he perceives as the downtrodden minorities. His main plan is to smuggle the technologically superior Wakandan weapons to countries to even up the fight. It all sounds reasonable at first, until the movie shows that part where Killmonger’s inspecting the weapons before shipment. He’s sending vibranium spears!
Spears!
Against countries that have guns! Is he for real? Sure, he remarks that the weapons are made from vibranium and could be smuggled anywhere since they won’t be caught by metal detectors or something, I dunno about you but I’d choose a gun over a vibranium spear any day.
So far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the only people we’ve seen who are able to wield vibranium weapons with ease are Captain America, and the Dora Milaje, Black Panther’s elite bodyguards. That makes it one chemically-enhanced super soldier, and a group of warriors who’ve been trained by Wakanda to be the king’s personal protectors. Does Killmonger really believe that handing melee weapons to the downtrodden would instantly turn them into perfect killing machines?
I don’t think so.
I’d buy into his plan easily if perhaps Killmonger’s minions raided Shuri’s laboratory and found those laser-shooting gauntlets she used in the final battle. Mass produce those babies and then send them to his would be revolutionaries around the world. Pushing buttons for those laser weapons surely beats learning how to use a spear without taking your own eye out, wouldn’t it?
And what about that rhinoceros in vibranium armor? Was Killmonger really serious in sending those as well? What good could they actually bring to his planned revolution? Can you just picture a horde of those rhinos stampeding across a city? How can we even take them as a threat when they’ve been easily hunted to near extinction in real life? The vibranium doesn’t even begin to cover their entire body so a single person with a rifle could take one out in a fight.
