In the movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Nick Fury gathers his remaining trusted allies to prevent the launch of the Project Insight Helicarriers. Maria Hill explains that should these helicarriers manage to lift off 3,000 feet in the air, Hydra will be able to target every individual marked for death in Zola’s algorithm. Fury’s plan is to insert his own controller chips into the 3 helicarriers so they can take control of the weapons, and maybe salvage whatever is left of the helicarriers.
Unfortunately for him, Captain America says he wants to bring everything down: the helicarriers, SHIELD, and Hydra. Everybody in the room agreed with the Captain, and Fury is forced to go along with destroying everything. At the end of the movie, the mission was a success and all three helicarriers are completely destroyed.
I’m wondering why Fury didn’t just have someone throw grenades or something into the helicarrier engines? Remember in the first Avengers movie, a single engine was bombed by Hawkeye and it severely crippled the helicarrier. Granted, these new helicarriers are using repulsor tech courtey of Iron Man, but why not throw grenades into two of them? I don’t think Fury has a shortage of grenades or explosives anyway.
Additionally, it would have been much easier to do a flyby from a jet and shoot those engines, as opposed to infiltrating each helicarrier and inserting a controller chip somewhere deep in the ship bowels. Falcon himself could probably do the entire job himself while Captain America helps out with clearing the Hydra agents inside the Triskelion.
